The Story Behind Our Back-to-School Haircut Campaign

A Fresh Start: Our Back-to-School Haircut Campaign with A Different Level Barbershop

The start of a new school year is an important time for students. It sets the stage for their academic success, and for many, it all begins with feeling confident on the first day. At One Can One Kid, we understand that something as simple as a fresh haircut can give children the boost they need to start the year strong. That’s why we created our Back-to-School Haircut Campaign, providing free haircuts to kids in need right before they head back to class. This annual event is designed to ensure every child feels prepared, confident, and ready to succeed.

Growing up, I always knew how important the first day of school was—it set the tone for the entire year. I remember needing a few key things to feel ready: a new pair of sneakers, a new backpack, and a fresh haircut. Those were essential. They weren’t just about looking good; they were about feeling good and starting the school year with confidence.

But over time, I've seen how many children face financial hardships that make it difficult for them to have these basics. Without access to these essentials—like a fresh haircut—many students feel behind before the school year even begins. At One Can One Kid, we wanted to change that. We believe that if you look good, you feel good, and if you feel good, you’ll do good. Our goal with the Back-to-School Haircut Campaign is to equip children with the confidence they need to start their school year on the right foot.

To bring this vision to life, we teamed up with A Different Level Barbershop in Topeka, owned by Wanda Mock. Every August, right before school starts, Wanda and her team of barbers offer their time and talent to make sure local students get a fresh haircut just in time for their first day. Wanda calls in her entire team, ensuring that every child who walks through the door gets the attention and care they deserve.

The event happens intentionally during the week before school starts so that students can walk into class on day one with their new haircut, feeling sharp and ready. By the time school begins, many of them already have their new shoes, backpacks, and supplies—our job is to make sure they also have the confidence that comes with a fresh haircut.
